Understand the boundaries of the role
Find out which tasks you may do independently and which require supervision. Ask about relevant training, safeguarding rules and the organisation's process for raising concerns. Do not assume that professional experience automatically authorises you to work outside the assigned role. Local procedures still matter, even when a task seems familiar.
Arrive prepared for the setting
Confirm the location, timings, clothing guidance and anything you should bring. Ask whether transport, meals or equipment are provided rather than assuming they will be. If you need an accessibility adjustment, describe the practical requirement in advance. The coordinator can then tell you what can realistically be arranged.
Finish with a clear handover
Before leaving, explain what is complete and what remains outstanding. Return equipment and follow instructions for any records you handled. If something was unclear, say so. A useful first session is not measured by doing everything; it is measured by completing an agreed task responsibly and learning how the team works.
