Ask a specific question
Instead of asking whether help is welcome, ask what would make the next week easier. A community group might need reliable transport, help organising records or someone to answer enquiries. Make room for an answer that involves less visible work. The purpose is to meet a need, not to create an impressive photograph.
Agree on a manageable commitment
Describe what you can offer, how often and for how long. Let the organisation decide whether it fits. A clear two-hour commitment is easier to plan around than an open promise to help whenever possible. Check who will coordinate the work and how changes should be communicated before making arrangements.
Review the result together
After the activity, ask what was useful and what should change next time. Listen without expecting praise. If the project no longer meets a need, adapt it or stop. Thoughtful seva includes the willingness to replace your own idea with a better one suggested by the community.
