Temple photography: ask before you take the picture

An open doorway or an impressive sculpture is not automatically an invitation to photograph. Temple photography involves rules about the space as well as consideration for the people using it.

Read the rules where you are

Look for signs and ask staff about the specific area. Permissions may differ between an outer courtyard, a museum and a worship space. Put the camera away where photography is prohibited. If guidance is unclear, wait until you can ask rather than assuming that another visitor’s behaviour establishes permission.

Keep people in control of their image

Avoid close-up photographs of worshippers without their agreement. A person praying, grieving or receiving assistance may not want that moment published. Be especially careful around children. If someone declines, accept the answer immediately. A memorable visit can be recorded through notes, a permitted architectural detail or a view without identifiable people.

Caption with care

When sharing an allowed photograph, name the place accurately and distinguish what you know from what you were told. Do not attach a legend to an unrelated image or imply access you did not have. Credit the photographer when using someone else’s work and check its licence. Respectful storytelling includes both how the image was made and how it is later presented.
